Enjoy Presenting the Work At Home Mums Christmas Gift Guide! We’ve found the beautiful, the practical and sometimes just the downright silly to help plan your Christmas gifts for anyone. Now happily updated for 2021.

Christmas is coming up fast! Now, if you’re not one of those people that has all their shopping done by August (me) and you’re trying to be a little bit more organised then last year’s shopping on the 24th of December (may also be me) then we are here to help!

Enter WAHM’s Christmas Gift Guide, the perfect companion for Christmas gift ideas. Now, given a lot of people in Australia can’t currently browse through shops and postage this year is a nightmare, we’re getting a head start on our guide and publishing in October.

We’ve scoured the internet to find interesting gift ideas, and most of them are by Work At Home Mums so you’ll be supporting small businesses at the same time. All without getting off the couch (or even out of your pajamas). So grab a glass of wine and lets go shopping.

Keep in mind that although we’ve divided it up into sections, a lot of the products and websites are full of things for everyone. Enjoy. 😉

Demystifying Money: Financial Literacy The Easy Way https://www.workathomemums.com.au/demystifying-money-financial-literacy-the-easy-way/
https://www.workathomemums.com.au/?p=90723

Do you get a sinking feeling when the topic of money comes up? You aren’t alone. According to a survey conducted last year by Savvy, a third of people (35%) confessed they only have a “primary school” level of financial and economic literacy. The HILDA report, a record of how Australians live, came to a similar conclusion, stating that some 75% of people struggled with basic financial literacy.

Though we live in a market economy, school doesn’t help us all that much to learn about it. So how can we bridge that gap? We have a few ways – and you don’t have to go back to school

Auditing Your Finances – And Insurance

41% of people in the survey said they’ve never audited their finances. Auditing your finances and preparing a budget can help you get a grasp on fundamental finance – it’s about balancing what comes in with what goes out. You need to figure out how much your household income is each month and where it all goes – transport, rent or mortgage repayments, groceries, luxuries, and so on. Then you can get a better understanding of how to allocate your resources to save money, invest, funnel into super, or pay off debts.

While you are looking at your finances, you should also think about insurance. Life insurance may be included with your super fund, but is it enough? Rice Warner Actuaries says that Australians are uninsured to the tune of $1.26 billion. If you can consider additional life insurance, including disability or income protection insurance, you should.

Get Appy

Your own bank will likely have a NetBank app where you can see where money comes in, where it goes out, and with a bit of fine tuning, predict your incoming bills. Using a widget on your home screen can give you a handle on your finances at a glance.

Learning with your kids is also helpful. Apps like Rooster Money or Spriggy teaches kids to figure out how to budget, understand income and expenses, and gives them a bit of control over their finances.

<ins class=”adsbygoogle” data-ad-client=”ca-pub-6472295354218158″ data-ad-slot=”4094939633″ data-ad-layout=”in-article” data-ad-format=”fluid”></ins>

“Getting the whole family on board will yield many dividends,” says Bill Tsouvalas, finance expert and Managing Director of Savvy. “Having the family involved will strengthen skills from top to bottom, and instil good values about saving, debt, and spending. It’s far more helpful than saying ‘you just can’t’ when your child asks why they can’t have a treat because it’s an unnecessary expense. Give them a reason, include them in the conversation.”

Use Free Resources

There are free resources out there to give you a basic education in financial literacy. The Wesley Mission has its own Financial Literacy Education Program, which incorporates lessons from MoneySmart and is designed to be easy to follow. Find out more here.

See a Financial Adviser

Four in five Australians according to the survey have never seen a financial adviser. They are worth their weight in gold. If you think they’re just for “rich people”, well, how do you think the rich got to where they are? Think of yourself as “pre-rich” – and you’re now laying the groundwork.

“Using all these resources can give you a big leg up in terms of managing your daily expenses and figuring out your finances for the future, including retirement,” Tsouvalas says. “The more you learn now, the better off you’ll be later.”

32 Useful job search tips and strategies https://www.workathomemums.com.au/useful-job-search-tips-and-strategies/
https://www.workathomemums.com.au/?p=90052

Job searching can be overwhelming and disheartening. From creating a great resume, searching through hundreds of listings, tailoring job applications, to receiving rejection letters (if you get a response at all) and finally getting an interview. We can certainly understand why the thought of looking for a new job is enough to make you stay at your current one!

Job searching, like anything, is actually a skill you can improve on, if you have the right tools and resources. So here are a few tried and tested tips and strategies to improve your job search capabilities so that you can find, and land, the right job for you.

Hints, tips and strategies for job searching

Keep in mind some of these tips will be useful to people already in employment and searching for the next step, others will be applicable for all job seekers. Take the ones that will help you the best and go for it.

1. Make a list of what you are looking for.

What industry are you applying for? What level of position? Do you want flexible or remote work? Make a list of the requirements for the job you are after and if a job ad doesn’t meet 70 – 80% of them, keep looking.

2. Stop procrastinating.

We know job searching seems daunting, but you won’t have any less to do by waiting. Get stuck into it and make the first step.

3. Don’t apply for everything you see.

If you are not currently working, you may be tempted to apply for everything you find, just to get something. But keep in mind that if you are not suited to the job, or don’t have the right skills for it, then you are not going to get looked at anyway. Spend more of your time and energy putting together a tailored application for jobs you are suited for, then just applying for everything you find.

<ins class=”adsbygoogle” data-ad-client=”ca-pub-6472295354218158″ data-ad-slot=”4094939633″ data-ad-layout=”in-article” data-ad-format=”fluid”></ins>

4. Search for people who have the job you want.

This doesn’t mean stalk anyone but have a quick look on LinkedIn at people who have the sort of job you want. What sort of skills and experience do they have? If they all have something in common, such as a particular course they’ve completed, that you don’t have, then look at ways you can get to their level of skill.

5. Audit your situation.

Are you finding that the job you really want is requiring more experience or skills than what you currently have, but don’t know the pathway to get there? Really audit your situation and get a realistic idea of where you are at in your career right now.

Tip 4 asks you to find some people with the job you want on LinkedIn. Once you’ve audited where you are right now, if you’ve found you’re not quite at your ideal job yet, looking at LinkedIn can also help you here by looking at the pathway people took to get to a particular job, as most people will put their previous experience on their profile. Look at the ways people got to your ideal job and you might find the right pathway that you are suited for now that you can use as a stepping stone to get the experience for the job you really want.

6. Moving internally can be smarter than job hopping.

Is the reason you are wanting to move jobs because you like the company but not the job, or you are looking for more responsibility? Then your best bet is probably to stay within the same company. Research has shown that if you job hop, you may be able to gather a pay rise, but the time until promotion is extended, as you need to now re-establish yourself at a new company before you’ll be considered for advancement.

Consider the reason you are wanting to move positions. If you are looking for career advancement, you might be better off applying for things in your own company. If you do still want to change companies, then look for positions that will give you more responsibility or a promotion from what you have now or be aware that you may be in for a longer time before advancement while you establish yourself.

7. Don’t get upset about rejection.

If you’re applying for many positions, expect some rejection. This can be demoralising but remember it’s not about you. There might be many applications for one position and there might only be one little thing that gives the position to someone over you.

<figure class=”aligncenter size-large is-resized”><img loading=”lazy” src=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/job-searching-tips.jpg” alt=”tips for your job search” class=”wp-image-90053″ width=”479″ height=”320″>

8. Gather feedback from your applications.

If you do get a rejection, and you’ve had at least a phone interview, then ask for feedback on your application to see if there is anything you can improve on for next time. There could be something on your resume or in your interview technique that can be worked on which you won’t know about without feedback.

9. Get a great resume.

Your resume should be designed so that employers will want to speak to you further. Keep it short, don’t hash out pages and pages of every job you’ve had since you were 15.

Showcase your achievements, not the duties of your positions. Outline what you achieved at your jobs, rather than your day-to-day tasks. Make sure you’re tailoring your resume to the positions you are applying for and it is relevant. And don’t’ lie, it’s too easy to be found out these days.

If you have a gap in your resume, due to children, caring, or illness (or even I your don’t), then our resume program Resume Writing for Return to Work Success can help you craft your resume. Or if you really struggle to write things yourself, there are many resume writers our there that can write one for you.

<ins class=”adsbygoogle” data-ad-client=”ca-pub-6472295354218158″ data-ad-slot=”4094939633″ data-ad-layout=”in-article” data-ad-format=”fluid”></ins>

10. Tailor your cover letter.

There is nothing worse as an employer then getting a copy and pasted cover letter that tells you nothing about the person applying for the position. I’ve also seen ones where they forgot to change the companies name before sending it – not a good look.

Make sure you are tailoring your cover letter to the company and position you are applying for. Do a little bit of research and highlight your suitability for the role and how you match the selection criteria. Our tips on how to write a great cover letter is a good starting point.

11. Be organised.

If you’re currently employed, you might only be applying for a few positions that really pique your interest. However, if you are unemployed you might be applying for a lot of positions and that is where it pays to be organised.

Write down the company, job title and the date you applied for the position. This way you can keep track of when and what you are applying for. This makes it easy if you want to follow up, or if you get a call for an interview. If you like, you could put it all into a spreadsheet, including responses you get, follow ups you have made and any interviews either phone or face to face. You might be reading heaps of job ads, so it pays to be organised and know if you’ve already applied for something.

12. Be confident and positive.

Try not to get bogged down in negativity when doing your jobs search or attending interviews. If you are positive and confident in your mindset this will show up in your application. If you don’t believe you are the right person for the job, then why would an employer? This is especially important in interviews. Go in confident and positive that you are the person they are looking for.

13. Prepare stories for a job interview

Yes, you won’t know the exact question you’ll be asked in a job interview, but there are a lot of standard ones that you can prepare for. Things like “tell me about a time where you showed exemplary customer service” or “when have you had to deal with difficult customer/supplier/colleague”. These sorts of questions you can start thinking about and have stories prepared. If you want to know what questions might come up and other things to think about in a interview then this article about interview tips may be helpful.

14. Get career ideas from personality tests.

If you’re not even sure what jobs you want to go for, then one way is to take online personality and career tests. There are many available and a lot are free. You take the test and it evaluates your personality to suggest career paths and jobs that would be more suitable for you.

15. Clean up your online social profile.

Just like you want a company and position to be a good fit for you, an employer wants to make sure that you are a good fit for their company. Yes, prospective employers can and will Google your name and check out any social media before offering you a position. Even if you have all of your social media set to private, actually check to see what someone can see, because even private accounts will show things like previous profile pictures or anything you’ve accidently made public.

Go into an incognito window and search for yourself and see what comes up. You will then know if you have to clean anything up that can be found that may inhibit an offer of employment.

<ins class=”adsbygoogle” data-ad-client=”ca-pub-6472295354218158″ data-ad-slot=”4094939633″ data-ad-layout=”in-article” data-ad-format=”fluid”></ins>

16. Network

There is a large number of jobs that are never advertised. So if you’re looking for a job, it pays to network. Join LinkedIn or Facebook pages and groups in your career path, or companies you are interested in, attend professional events in your industry, and think about people you already know who work for companies you’re attracted to or may know of positions.

18. Don’t just rely on mainstream websites

When you think about searching for work online, most people go to Seek or CareerOne and be done with it. Yes, those sorts of sites are big and have lots of positions advertised, but they can also be expensive for employers and so many are turning to smaller of niche sites. Don’t just restrict your job search to the big websites, but look at other areas to find work. You will also find less competition for the advertised positions on the lesser known or industry sites.

19. Know your strengths.

Nobody is great at everything. But everyone is great at something. If you know what you are really good at, it is easy to highlight this in resumes and interviews. Work out your strengths so that you can confidently use them to your advantage.

20. Dress for success.

If you’re job searching, don’t do it in your pyjamas. This may sound a bit weird but it helps to get into a professional mindset by being dressed how you would if you were going to work or an interview. If you are scheduled for a phone interview, make sure you are dressed and ready to go. Even though employers won’t be able to see you, your attitude and voice will come across better if you are in the ready to interview mindset.

21. Address being overqualified.

If you are well overqualified for a position some employers will overlook you for the job, even if it is exactly the job that you are looking for. You can tailor your resume to exclude some aspects but this can risk you excluding things that would land you the job. So the answer is to just address your overqualification and tell them why you want that job and how your skills and experience can benefit the company.

22. Don’t burn your bridges.

Most industries are actually pretty small. Even if you leave one company, try to do it in a civilised and professional manner. If you stay in the same industry there’s every chance that somewhere along the way you will work with someone again.

Previous colleagues and bosses are also good ways to network new job opportunities. If they have moved on to new companies and you have a good relationship with them, you may find you get told about positions available that would otherwise not be advertised.

23. Use a professional email address.

You’re sexydolphin@ email address might have been cute and funny at 16, but it’s not the sort of email address you should be putting on your resume. Email addresses are easy and free to set up so there’s no excuse to not have a professional one for your job searching. The simplest is to just use your name. If you still want to use your other quirky one for personal stuff that fine, but it’s a good idea to have a boring one for your job search.

24. Don’t send out too many resumes at a time.

Sometimes you might spend an entire week sending out resumes and applying for jobs, but if you send out too many at once, you can lose track. Then when someone rings you about an application you have no idea what job they are talking about because you’ve applied for so many. Try to only send out as many applications as you can keep track of (and use your spreadsheet in tip 11).

<figure class=”aligncenter size-large is-resized”><img loading=”lazy” src=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/strategies-for-job-searching.jpg” alt=”how to improve your jobs search skills” class=”wp-image-90056″ width=”505″ height=”336″ srcset=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/strategies-for-job-searching.jpg 505w, https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/strategies-for-job-searching-480×320.jpg 480w” sizes=”(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 505px, 100vw”>

25. Research the company before applying.

Spend a bit of time Googling and researching the company before applying for a position. You can use this information to tailor your cover letter and resume and it shows that you have taken the time and effort to actually investigate the company you are trying to join. You’re research might also find that it’s not a company you want to work for and you decide you don’t want to apply.

Where possible find out who to address your application to – don’t just write to whom it may concern. If you can’t get hold of a contact at the company, address your letter to ‘Hiring Manager’ if applying to a small business, or ‘Recruitment / Human Resources Department’ to large companies to ensure it ends up with the right person.

26. Check for spelling and grammar errors.

There is absolutely nothing worse than reading a resume or cover letter that states how you are very detail orientated that is then full of spelling errors. Make sure you are checking for all errors and get someone to proofread the final copy. Sometimes you end up looking at something so much you can’t see any errors, and a fresh pair of eyes can pick up things you’ve missed.

<ins class=”adsbygoogle” data-ad-client=”ca-pub-6472295354218158″ data-ad-slot=”4094939633″ data-ad-layout=”in-article” data-ad-format=”fluid”></ins>

27. State how you can help the employer.

Resumes, cover letters and interviews aren’t actually about you. They are about showcasing how you can help the employer achieve their goals. Don’t just state how wonderful you are, phrase it all in a way that will let people know how your skills and experience are going to help achieve the objectives of the company.

28. Use multiple platforms if you have a big resume.

A cover letter should entice the reader to go onto your resume, and your resume should want them to look further at you and call you to have a chat. Keep your resume short (maximum 2 pages) but if you have more information you want to convey about your job history, skills or experience, put up a more comprehensive profile on LinkedIn or another platform and link to that in your resume.

29. Don’t be scared of a resume gap.

People tend to panic if there is a big gap on their resume. This can be due to unemployment, children, caring responsibilities, injury or illness. Life happens and more employers know that so you don’t need to stress as much about a gap if you explain it in the correct way and don’t just ignore it. Here’s some tips on how to explain and employment gap.

30. Don’t be afraid of contract or temporary work.

If you’re not currently employed, you may be looking for full time positions only. However, don’t discount contract of temporary work. It is a great opportunity to showcase your skills to an employer while getting paid. If you can wow an employer in a temporary position, you might just find yourself being offered a permanent one. And if not, you can still be job searching at the same time for something after the contract runs out.

31. Use multiple job searching platforms.

Don’t just look for work in one place. Look online, use networking, go to companies directly and yes, there are even still job ads in the newspaper.

32. Follow up with a thank you after interviews.

A quick email to say thank you after an interview can make you stand out from other candidates. Thank the person for their time and give them a compliment about their professionalism or company (if it’s warranted). Make sure you are sincere and not just sucking up.

Job searching, like anything, takes time and effort. If you want to land your perfect job, you need to be ensuring that you are doing it properly. Tailor your resume to the positions, do some research and ensure your cover letter is appropriate for the job ad. This will lead to more success in getting interviews, where you can wow them with how you can help the company succeed.

How to Find Free Images for Your Website https://www.workathomemums.com.au/how-to-find-free-images-for-your-website/
https://www.workathomemums.com.au/?p=90006

Images are a great way to complement the information you are trying to communicate on your website, blog or social media. Lets face it, humans are visual creatures and we like looking at pictures. A compelling photo can tell your story better and increase the likelihood of someone sharing your content. But you might not know how to find free images for your website or other marketing.

Nearly every image created is protected by copyright. If you take a photo yourself you automatically own the rights to use or reproduce that image however you want. But if you want to use someone else’s photo you will need to use a public domain image or make sure that the image is covered by a licence that allows use for your purpose. There are many places now where you can get images for free to use for your next blog or post.

Finding free images is not as simple as searching on Google for the image you want and saving it. Getting images this way is a big no-no as you will most likely be breaching copyright. Photo sharing sites are website that allow people to share their photos and created images for other users to download. These can either be public domain images, which you are free to use in any way, or via a licence, which may mean you are restricted in some ways of using the image, or need to provide attribution.

Websites to find free images for your website and marketing

If you are wondering how to find free images for your website, blogs, marketing or products, here are some of the photo sharing websites available. Keep in mind you may not have as great a selection of images than if you were going to a paid site. To give you a bit of a showcase of what sort of images they have available we’ve searched for the term ‘working from home’ on each of them (something dear to our heart and probably a common search term in the past year).

Unsplash

Unsplash has a licence that gives you the ability to download their pictures for free and can be used for commercial and non commercial purposes. You do not have to give attribution but it is appreciated. Their licence details can be found here.

<figure class=”aligncenter size-large”><img loading=”lazy” width=”800″ height=”381″ src=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/unsplash-example.png” alt class=”wp-image-90007″ srcset=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/unsplash-example.png 800w, https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/unsplash-example-480×229.png 480w” sizes=”(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 800px, 100vw”>

Pexels

You can use the images found on Pexels for free without attribution. Their licence is fairly broad and you can use the for your website, social media, marketing materials and more.
StockSnap

StockSnap gives you a Creative Commons CC0 licence on their photos. This means you’re free to use and edit it how you’d like without attribution, but like all of the free images, you also need to ensure what is in the photo is also free of any copyright rules. You can get access to their licence details here.

<figure class=”aligncenter size-large”><img loading=”lazy” width=”800″ height=”395″ src=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/stocksnap-example.png” alt class=”wp-image-90012″ srcset=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/stocksnap-example.png 800w, https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/stocksnap-example-480×237.png 480w” sizes=”(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 800px, 100vw”>

Kaboompics

Kaboompics allows both commercial and non commercial use without attributions. There full licencing information is here but they allow most things. The photos come from the photographer who created the website so there’s no risk of finding photos you can’t use for commercial purposes.

<figure class=”aligncenter size-large”><img loading=”lazy” width=”800″ height=”403″ src=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/kaboompics-example.png” alt class=”wp-image-90013″ srcset=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/kaboompics-example.png 800w, https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/kaboompics-example-480×242.png 480w” sizes=”(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 800px, 100vw”>

Gratisography

Gratisography has a small collection, but some quite unique photos and vectors. Their licence allows you to do most things, as long as you’re not redistributing the photo. We didn’t find any photos on work from home, but I did like a couple of their vectors for a few other projects.

Flickr

Flickr is a photo management and sharing tool that allows you to also search for photos people have put up under licence. The easiest way to do this is to search for your term and then under the licence term in the search results choose ‘commercial use & mods allowed’. Because it’s essentially a photo sharing platform rather than for finding commercial photos it can be time-consuming to search for great photos. You will also need to check the licence for the photo you want to use because they all vary and you want to make sure you are using the photo you want legally.

WOC In Tech Chat

WOC in Tech Chat is an album on Flickr dedicated to photos of women of colour in technology. They allow you to use the photos with attribution which means you have to acknowledge WOC in Tech Chat when using the photo.

<figure class=”aligncenter size-large”><img loading=”lazy” width=”800″ height=”377″ src=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/wocintech-example.png” alt class=”wp-image-90014″ srcset=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/wocintech-example.png 800w, https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/wocintech-example-480×226.png 480w” sizes=”(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 800px, 100vw”>

Create Her Stock

Create Her Stock is a stock photo site primarily focusing on women of colour. Their photos are available on their licence as editorial and non-commercial advertising which means you can’t use them to create products, but can use them on your website / blog etc. They also have a premium subscription to get access to all of their images.

Burst

Burst is a part of Shopify and gives you access to free photos for websites and commercial use. Their licence is the same as the CC0 so you can use the photos for commercial purposes without attribution.

<ins class=”adsbygoogle” data-ad-client=”ca-pub-6472295354218158″ data-ad-slot=”4094939633″ data-ad-layout=”in-article” data-ad-format=”fluid”></ins>

<figure class=”aligncenter size-large”><img loading=”lazy” width=”800″ height=”374″ src=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/burst-example.png” alt class=”wp-image-90015″ srcset=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/burst-example.png 800w, https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/burst-example-480×224.png 480w” sizes=”(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 800px, 100vw”>

ISO Republic

ISO Republic is another site working under the Creative Commons CC0 licence. It does seem to have less photos under our search term.

<figure class=”aligncenter size-large”><img loading=”lazy” width=”800″ height=”379″ src=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/isorepublic-example.png” alt class=”wp-image-90016″ srcset=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/isorepublic-example.png 800w, https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/isorepublic-example-480×227.png 480w” sizes=”(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 800px, 100vw”>

New Old Stock

New Old Stock is a photo site with vintage photos from public archives. They don’t have a search function so you have to browse but there are some great photos there, even if you just want to look through for nostalgia.

<figure class=”aligncenter size-large”><img loading=”lazy” width=”800″ height=”403″ src=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/new-old-stock-example.jpg” alt class=”wp-image-90017″ srcset=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/new-old-stock-example.jpg 800w, https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/new-old-stock-example-480×242.jpg 480w” sizes=”(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 800px, 100vw”>

FancyCrave

FancyCrave doesn’t have a search function, but is divided into photo packs with different themes. They also don’t seem to have any visible licencing information.

Free Images

Free Images allows you to use their images on your website, social media, advertising and other publications, but their licence has restrictions on other uses such as the selling of products.

Our search of ‘working from home’ didn’t yield any results which I thought was odd, so their search function may not be great, or the photographers aren’t putting in the right keywords.

Image licencing terms you should know

When looking for free images you can use for your website or marketing, there are a few licencing terms and restrictions you should become familiar with. These licences can determine where and what you can use the image for legally, so it’s important to make sure you are checking the licence that comes with the image. Whatever site you use, make sure you check the licencing arrangements and terms and conditions they have in place and don’t just assume all photo sites are the same.

It’s important to remember that any licence gives you the right to use the image a certain way, it does not give you ownership of the image or the copyright.

Non Commercial

Non commercial use of an image gives you the licence to use it for personal or editorial reasons. This generally encompasses things you are not going to gain monetary value for. Anything that will not be marketed, promoted or sold for money can fall under non commercial use such as presentations, research papers or personal projects.

Commercial

Commercial use covers using the image in marketing and promotion of a product that is going to give you a monetary gain. If you are using the image to promote a product, or in the product itself, that is being sold this is considered commercial use. If you are using an image on your website, and you are selling anything at all on that site, you are better off getting a licence that allows for commercial use of that image because even a blog on your website could be considered a promotion of products you are selling.

<ins class=”adsbygoogle” data-ad-client=”ca-pub-6472295354218158″ data-ad-slot=”4094939633″ data-ad-layout=”in-article” data-ad-format=”fluid”></ins>

A licence granted use for commercial uses may also have further restrictions, such as a limit on the amount of printing and products the image can be used for before charging additional fees.

Creative Commons

Creative Commons is a non profit organisations that has created a licencing system used by many creative websites that allow sharing and downloading of images. It was created as a way to standardise copyright permissions. There are many levels of a creative commons licence and they all allow differing levels of permissions so it is important to check that if a creative commons licence is being used, what type it is.

Public Domain

Public domain means that the images are free from copyrights, due to it expiring, having been forfeited or is inapplicable. It’s important to remember that just because someone puts an image on the internet, does not make it a public domain image and copyright still applies unless otherwise stated.

Royalty Free

Some licences allow the owner of the image to charge a fee or royalty every time you use the image. With a royalty free image, you do not need to pay each time you use the image. If you see the term royalty free that doesn’t mean that the image is available free to use, as there is generally an initial cost for the image licence, it just means you do not need to pay an ongoing fee for use. You will also need to look at whether the licence gives you commercial or non-commercial use of the image. Commercial use for products for royalty free images often has a higher fee.

The Benefits of Flexible Working Arrangements for Employers https://www.workathomemums.com.au/benefits-of-flexible-working-arrangements-for-employers/
https://www.workathomemums.com.au/?p=89982

The nature of the workforce is changing. With the ageing of the population and changing labour market conditions, adopting a flexible approach to work helps businesses attract a diverse workforce including mature age workers, those in remote communities, parents and people with disabilities.

Flexible working and working from home in Australia and New Zealand is becoming widely accepted. In business today, flexible working isn’t an option – it’s a necessity. There are many employees wanting to work flexibly for any number of reasons. And there are several great benefits to employers that allow this option.

Apart from your legal obligations, businesses are appreciating more and more how flexible working can benefit their performance through improved staff motivation and productivity. Research shows that implementing flexibility helps improve productivity as employees have increased levels of engagement, job-satisfaction and well-being.

What is flexible working?

Where once we were told to aim for eight hours of work, eight of play and eight of rest, these days we are realising such a rigid schedule rarely works for the best. Professionals tired of being pressured into taking work home, working longer hours, and facing a grim daily commute are looking outwards for better lifestyle options.

Flexible working is an agreement between employers and employees that afford them differing work arrangements from the regular 9 to 5. These arrangements could include:

Working from home

Flexible rosters

Flexible work start and finish times

Flexible arrangements for leave

Regular part-time work

Rostered days off

Compressed working weeks, e.g. compressing your normal work hours into less days

Job-sharing

A flexible working arrangement generally consists of employees and employers choosing where the employee works from, the work schedule that is best for them and scheduling their work day.

<ins class=”adsbygoogle” data-ad-client=”ca-pub-6472295354218158″ data-ad-slot=”4094939633″ data-ad-layout=”in-article” data-ad-format=”fluid”></ins>

As an employer you may think that flexible working is geared towards the employee and that there are no benefits to your business. However there are many benefits to offering flexible work for companies, that go beyond having happier employees.

The benefits of flexible working for businesses

These days people want to find jobs which allow them to work flexibly in a way that allows them to arrange their own timetables, create more time for family, career development and enjoyment, as well as increased job satisfaction.

To this end, employers are catching on to the fact that they need to offer more flexibility to their employees if they are going to hold on to a loyal and productive workforce. But there are also many other benefits to businesses if they choose to go down a more flexible route.

Attracting great workers

More and more people are looking for flexible working in their job search. Offering flexible working arrangements is a major factor in being able to attract the best candidates to any job opportunities you have.

A global study conducted by IWD of more than 15,000 people in 2019 found that if presented with 2 similar job offers, 83% of people would choose the one that offered flexible working options. The survey also found that 85% of Australian businesses are offering flexible work of some description which means if a business is still stuck in rigid work practices, they are lagging behind and might be missing out on attracting key talent.

Flexible working, particularly remote working, can also allow a business to widen their search for talent as they are no longer restricted to the area their offices are in.

Retaining your employees

According to a 2016 survey by CPA Australia, the main reasons for people to ask for flexible working practices are caring for children and achieving a work life balance, with most people requesting being between the ages of 30 – 49.

The same study found that women are more likely to request flexible work then men. This may be due to the nature of women more likely being responsible for the day to day running of their household and trying to fit work and life in together. But men are increasingly wanting to create a better work life balance as well and are sharing the parenting responsibilities much more evenly then ever before.

By allowing employees to work from home or take on flexible work practices – working outside the usual nine to five to allow employees to pick up their children, for example – employers can guarantee that staff will be happier, more productive, and more likely to stick with them.

Employees will stay longer with a company if they are happy, and the work they are doing suits their lifestyle and obligations. This in turn reduces turnover and training costs for businesses as they are not having to hire and train new employees.

<ins class=”adsbygoogle” data-ad-client=”ca-pub-6472295354218158″ data-ad-slot=”4094939633″ data-ad-layout=”in-article” data-ad-format=”fluid”></ins>

<figure class=”aligncenter size-large is-resized”><img loading=”lazy” src=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/flexible-working-benefits-for-employers.jpg” alt class=”wp-image-89985″ width=”496″ height=”331″ srcset=”https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/flexible-working-benefits-for-employers.jpg 496w, https://www.workathomemums.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/flexible-working-benefits-for-employers-480×320.jpg 480w” sizes=”(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 496px, 100vw”>

Productivity benefits

Your first thought as an employer might be that if you allow your employees more flexibility or the ability to work from home, their productivity will decrease as they are not being monitored. However, the reality of this is generally the opposite.

Just because someone is turning up to an office on a daily basis, doesn’t mean they are working productively. In fact, a 2019 survey of over 1000 employees found that 56% of office workers were finding ways to avoid working with only 39% of remote workers doing the same, and on average remote workers worked 1.4 days more a month.

Many studies have shown a positive connection to flexible working arrangements and increased productivity with employees actually working better, longer and with less absenteeism.

A trial by New Zealand company Perpetual Guardian of a 4 day work week actually saw an increase of productivity of 20% as well as happier employees.

Improving Workplace Diversity

Offering flexible working improves workplace diversity and inclusion as return to work mothers, carers, mature age workers and workers with a disability are the ones who will benefit from flexible working the most.

It’s not just parents and carers who can benefit from flexible working. This sensible and modern approach to work is something that can improve the lives of everyone. If you can cast a wider net of who you are able to employ through flexible working, then you can end up with the best candidates possible.

Offers better measures for success

So many managers judge an employee’s success rate by what they can see, rather than what the employee does. They will often judge a person by how much they are in the office, rather than the work being completed.

When you are in a more flexible environment, companies need to re-evaluate what makes a successful employee. Employees meeting their deadline and key performance indicators, whether in the office or not, will be more highly valued then those that sit at their desk for 10 hours per day seeming like they are doing work.

Better relationships with your employees

The best companies to work for are those that show respect and empower their employees. One of the best ways to do this is through flexible working schedules and working from home. This shows you have enough respect and trust in the people in the business to allow them some flexibility.

<ins class=”adsbygoogle” data-ad-client=”ca-pub-6472295354218158″ data-ad-slot=”4094939633″ data-ad-layout=”in-article” data-ad-format=”fluid”></ins>

Embracing this flexible working relationship benefits the business as well as the employee through:

Fewer missed days at work eg. if you should not be in an office but aren’t sick enough that you can’t get some work done; or have an appointment that would previously necessitate a day off if you weren’t allowed to work from home.

Less turnover of staff if employees feel they can negotiate flexible working in a situation that may have previously needed them to quit.

Longer careers of knowledgeable employees who are looking to relocate or want to downsize into a part time role.

A greener workplace

Both companies and employees can improve their carbon footprint through flexible working, especially working from home. Employees working from home don’t have to commute. Because of this there is less carbon monoxide being released in the atmosphere.

Businesses can save money and benefit the environment from flexible work practices as well. If all of their employees aren’t in the office at the same time, they can rent smaller premises and use less electricity and water, helping to reduce their negative impact on the environment.

Improved mental health

Long commutes and workplace stress is a big factor in peoples mental health. Having a better work life balance that results in less stress improves mental health greatly. Flexible working can offer this to a lot of people as well as giving employees a sense of control in their everyday life.

Most people spend the majority of their waking hours working. Reducing the conflict between work and life by offering some flexibility can reduce stress and anxiety, leading to happier and more productive workers.

The issue of finding and attaining a good balance between work and personal life is a growing trend for job seekers when making career decisions. Balancing work with family and personal responsibilities is a challenge in our busy lives, and those companies that make it easier to find that balance will be rewarded with more content employees.

The concept of working from home, flexible working and telecommuting has gained momentum over the past few years and is widely becoming accepted, recognized, and formalized across the board. All tiers of Government and private sector companies are recognizing the benefits of work life balance initiatives. There are even companies who help employers become more family friendly.

For employees still stuck in an office for ten hours a day and a two hour commute, be assured that there are other choices out there – many companies offer partly or entirely work-from-home positions, flexible timetables and family-friendly employment practices. It is simply a matter of searching for them. Or if you already have a job you love you might want to approach them about flexible working arrangements.

Australian data from the 2007 National Work/Life Benchmarking Study conducted by Managing Work|Life Balance International in conjunction with CCH Australia, found that best practice organisations reported the following key benefits from flexible work arrangements:

37% stated that their work/life balance strategy contributed to a reduction in absenteeism

88% stated that flexible work place practices have helped to manage staff more effectively

79% reported a positive impact on work productivity

<ins class=”adsbygoogle” data-ad-client=”ca-pub-6472295354218158″ data-ad-slot=”4094939633″ data-ad-layout=”in-article” data-ad-format=”fluid”></ins>

76% stated that flexible workplace practices enabled them to consistently attract and retain the best possible talent

54% said that their work/life balance strategies have contributed to a reduction in staff turnover.

When searching for jobs online, most job seekers prefer niche job boards over general job boards because these sites offer more targeted job search results and a greater variety of relevant job opportunities.

If you are an employer looking to hire staff and reap the benefits of a flexible workforce, head to our jobs board.
